Sketch of Mirka’s siblings

On April 2, 2009 · 28 Comments

Although most of them don’t come up in the graphic novel (which I’m working on, really!), Mirka actually has a lot of sisters. Just one brother, though. Anyhow, I thought this sketch of all the siblings would be fun to post.

Well, I need to finish the English edition first!

Anyhow, as I understand it, finding foreign publishers will be handled by my wonderful English-language publisher, Abrams.

I can never remember which I use on which site.

Anywho, most of the names are believable (their namesakes live no more than three blocks from be in any direction), but Crocha and Chayan I’ve never heard before. Where did you hear them?

I’m not trying to be critical, just curious.

It’s not always easy being Zindel. 🙂

I found nearly all the names by flipping through “Mystics, Mavericks, and Merrymakers” and writing down the names mentioned in there.

    Ahhh. Thanks for enlightening me!

Can I take this opportunity to ask when (or if) we’ll get another installment of Hereville?

Not until 2010 — and it might be late 2010. It all depends on how long it takes me to finish drawing the graphic novel, and how it works into Abrams’ publishing schedule.

However, that won’t be exactly “another” installment of Hereville — it’ll be the same story you’ve already read, although with a lot of new stuff (two of Mirka’s sisters — Rochel and Gittel — appear a fair amount in the graphic novel). Overall, that will be about 140 pages long.

Then I’ll start working on some new stories. How long those take to appear depends on a lot of things — for instance, if the first Hereville GN has decent sales, then presumably the next story won’t appear until it’s in print. However, if the sales aren’t good, then it’s back to the web for me, and you folks will get to see the new stuff sooner.

I’d have to second never having heard the names “Crocha” and “Chayan” before. “Brocha” and “Chaya,” yes.

  17. Barry says:

I’ll take Yochva and Shmuel’s words for it! The characters will be renamed.

Is “Yochva” a female or male name? If it’s female, I could name one of them Yochva, if you’d like.

Just found this and really enjoy it. It has the quality I admire in good novels — to put me into the minds of people in a different culture than my own. The artwork is very imaginative, too.

    Please keep doing this.

I’m pretty sure Yochva is a girl’s name. (Short for Yocheved, perhaps?)
