“Without a doubt, this is the best graphic novel of 2010 for kids. Bar none.”

—Elizabeth Bird, School Library Journal.

“Deutsch’s graphic novel is unique, laugh-out-loud funny, and thoroughly engrossing. Sequel, please!”

Tanya Auger, Horn Book Magazine

“Mirka is the heroine that girlhood dreams are made of… Hereville is pure enchantment.”

Barbara M. Moon, School Library Journal (starred review)

“Deutsch creates a beautiful, detail-rich world with a muted, ethereal palette that masterfully blends faith and fantasy with astounding harmony. Undoubtedly one of the cleverest graphic novels of the year; let’s hope this isn’t the last of Mirka.”

Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“I have finally fallen in love with my first graphic novel… the perfect bat mitzvah gift.”

Sonja Bolle, Los Angeles Times

“This is a terrific story, told with skill and lots of heart, that readers of all ages will enjoy.”

Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“I’ve known Barry Deutsch and his work for years, but Hereville is a delightful surprise. Funny, charming, and thoroughly original.”

Scott McCloud

“One of the most charming graphic novels published this year… The simple, vital line art makes for expressive characters as well as rich backgrounds that immerse us in Mirka’s world.”

Micheal Burstein, Boston Pheonix

“An elegant, subtle examination into the gender roles, deep religious roots, and everyday cultural elements of an Orthodox Jewish society, while also being a witty, enormously clever adventure quest featuring a girl who will happily and firmly inform you that she is, indeed, hero material.”

The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books (starred review)

“Comics, and the rest of the world, for that matter, need more girl heroes like Mirka. She will have readers cheering for her every step of the way.”

Raina Telgemeier

Hereville is a joy to read. It ingeniously combines elements I’d never expect to find in one book: lively, vivid drawing; clever prose; a keen sense of adventure; and an accurate, engaging picture of Orthodox Jewish life. Deutsch mixes it all with such skill it almost feels magical. He has created a unique and unforgettable book.”

Dr. Stephanie Wellen Levine, author of Mystics, Mavericks, and Merrymakers: An Intimate Journey Among Hasidic Girls

“Author/illustrator Barry Deutsch offers up a mitzvah — a graphic novel which has joy, style, lots of Yiddishkeit, adventure, and magic.”

Jane Yolen

“I really love Hereville by Barry Deutsch. I think of it as a Miyasaki movie if Miyasaki was Jewish and had Terry Pratchett’s sense of humor.”

Emma T. Capps, cartoonist.

“I’m a sucker for any story involving a kick-butt girl seeking adventure and defeating enemies with her smarts, and Hereville definitely falls into that category, but it is also gives a charming portrait of Mirka, her family, and her world.”

    Barry!

Thank you so so much for the personalized drawing for our daughter Wren. I love the caption, and Mirka, and it’s pretty cool that you cared enough to draw an actual wren too. And I love that Mirka’s strange day involves shrinking to bird size. =D We are really looking forward to reading and showing her the book when she’s old enough. Mirka’s got spunk and we love her.

Thanks again so much. You rock!
