“How Mirka Got Her Sword,” Page 29

This is one of my favorite pages; for my tastes, the layout is very successful. A lot of cartoonists don’t like drawing people talking, but it’s actually my favorite thing to draw.

This is the first page of the comic without Mirka on it, I think.

What does he keep pausing for? It’s like he’s listening to someone replying or to something in his head, except there’s nothing happening. Also where he repeats himself, it’s like he’s talking over a rejection, but we don’t see it. So what’s really going on? And how old is he again?

  3. I think he is listening to himself talking. he does sound *pretty* important here, you know? I especially like the semi-noble, self-congratulatory, turned-to-the-side pose in panel 5. unless I have totally misinterpreted it!

I see his pauses as him trying to decide whether or not to act (physically stop her.) He obviously wants to, but he can’t seem to make himself, so he takes the next easiest step… he talks.

Happens a lot, lots of words, not much action. 😉
