    First, she was Mary’s (played by Mary Tyler Moore) effusive Jewish friend in that MTM series whose name I forget. Then she had a spin-off series of her own. The funny thing is that The actress playing Rhoda wasn’t jewish at all.

    That “scratchy voice” you’re thinking of is probably Rhoda’s sister Brenda, played by Julie Kavner. Recognize that name? She’s now better known as the voice of… Marge Simpson.
